Trails of the Pacific Northwest and Alaska

[News: President Trump recently upgraded Arizona’s Chiricahua from a national monument to a national park.]

The PNW & AK region has ten trails managed by the NPS that are not individual park units: six historic, three scenic and one geologic.

  • The Lewis & Clark NHT passes through Idaho, Oregon and Washington, as they followed the great rivers to map the trail through the Rocky Mountains to the sea.
  • Both the California and Oregon Pioneer NHTs travel partly through Idaho on their way to settling in the west.
  • The Nez Perce NHT includes Idaho and Oregon as they attempted to flee the US military.
  • The Chilkoot NHT tracks the treacherous golden stairs up to the Canadian border in Alaska, where it continues as a national historic site in the Yukon Territory.
  • And the Iditarod NHT celebrates the achievements on the dogsled trails in Alaska’s winter.
  • The Continental Divide NST winds through the panhandle of Idaho on its way to the border.
  • The Pacific Crest NST is one of the nation’s great cross country trails and its northern section is in Oregon and Washington.
  • The Pacific Northwest NST runs through Oregon and Washington to the Pacific.
  • And last but not least, the Ice Age Floods NGT tracks the path of glacial meltwater through Idaho and Washington.

All these trails cross through high mountains, and the PNW & AK trails are all dramatically beautiful.
